This silhouette was originally from the collection of Nathan Hale, a general in the American Civil War, and descended in the Hale family until sold privately in the late 20th century. Auguste Édouart was considered one of the best silhouette artist of his day and he cut silhouettes for the elite of American society. Signed and dated, NY, 1845. Mounted in the original bevel edge birdseye frame. H: 11.5"; W: 8.5" (at sight).
